Dan Thompson, the cartoonist of Graham who is the creator of the comic strip hero “Rip Haywire” is finding a wider audience.
Rip, a comic we picked up in March of 2009, is gaining new customers all the time. It’s syndicated I dozens of newspapers nationwide, and has a big online audience. Now, another of Dan’s creations, is being picked up for a quick look by MAD magazine.
Jungle Jeff is part of Dan’s creative stable and has appeared before in MAD’s “The Strip Club” feature, which highlights different cartoonists. Jungle Jeff will be in issue No. 510, Dan said.
“Jungle Jeff is a riff on the old jungle adventure strips from the golden age of comics like ‘Jungle Jim.’ This will be Jungle Jeff’s second installment in MAD with hopefully more to come.”
Dan’s mix of humor and action-adventure sets his work apart from other comic serials. His Rip Haywire is a comic compilation of action heroes like Indiana Jones. He also gives a nod to the classic serials like Dick Tracy.
It’s good stuff. My longtime friend Paul Trap, the creator of “Thatababy,” is a big admirer of “Rip Haywire,” especially Dan’s artistry.
Speaking of Rip, Dan also said the character would have its own graphic novel coming out in October. The 112-page book is being produced by IDW Publishing, the fifth-largest comic book publisher in the nation. It’s called “Rip Haywire and the Curse of Tangaroa!” It’s available for pre-order on amazon.com.
